Membuat pakaian berdesain indah merupakan salah satu tanda dari canggihnya teknik pembuatan dan alatnya. Alat canggih tersebut salah satunya adalah mesin bordir komputer. Pada awalnya membordir dilakukan dengan mesin bordir manual yang menggunakan alat genjotan kaki. Namun saat ini seiring dengan kemajuan teknologi, bordir manual dapat digantikan perannya oleh bordir komputer. Manusia (pekerja) sebagai operator atau menyelenggara agar mesin tetap berjalan sesuai dengan kebutuhan.
Salah satu pengusaha disain pakaian dengan mesin bordir komputer ini adalah Bapak Syaiful Efendi. Selain berprofesi sebagai pegawai PNS di IAIN Metro, beliau juga menekuni usaha ini sejak tahun 2012. Beliau kerap disapa dengan nama Pepen oleh karena itu, usaha beliau ini dinamai dengan Pepen Bordir Komputer. Pepen bordir komputer beralamat di jalan AH. Nasution, 21 Polos Kelurahan Yosodadi, Metro Timur, dekat dengan gedung DPRD kota Metro. Beliau dibantu oleh dua orang pekerja dalam menyelesaikan pesanan para pelanggannya.
Pepen bordir komputer melayani pembuatan disain yang diantaranya: baju seragam sekolah, seragam pekerja, kaos, logo, bet lokasi dan nama. Untuk pengerjaan dengan bordir komputer ini membutuhkan beberapa langkah: Pertama, siapkan bentuk disain yang akan dibordir, kemudian pasangkan kain atau bahan yang akan dibordir pada permukaan mesin, caranya kain dijepit dengan ram atau pencepit kain, kemudian letakkan pada tempat yang tersedia. Pastikan data atau file terbaca di monitor mesin, selanjutnya atur dan jalankan mesin. Terkahir adalah finishing, yaitu proses perapihan kain yang telah dibordir.
Usaha bordir pak Pepen ini terhitung lumayan banyak penghasilannya. Meskipun untuk membeli mesin ini memang tidak sedikit uang yang harus dikeluarkan, akan tetapi pengahasilan yang didapatkan juga tidak sedikit yang segera terkumpulkan. Semakin cepat dan banyak jumlah barang yang dibordir maka semakin cepat dan banyak pula keuntungan yang diperolehnya. Bahkan sehari saja mesin ini bisa menghasilkan hingga juataan rupiah. Sebenarnya pak Pepen memiliki dua mesin bordir, yaitu bordir dengan enam kepala dan dua belas kepala. Harga mesin bordir yang memiliki enam kepala berkisar Rp. 100 juta per unit. Untuk yang dua belas kepala kurang lebihnya Rp. 200 juta per unit. Belum lama ini karena yang dua belas kepala itu rusak, maka ia jual. Tetapi dengan potensi pasar yang masih begitu besar di Kota Metro, modal sebesar itu rasanya masih masuk akal dengan penghasilan yang didapatkan.
Untuk harga jasa pembordiran tergantung tingkat kesulitan motif dan banyaknya ruang kain yang akan dibordir. Misalnya untuk membordir di baju belakang, jika hanya tulisan itu biasanya Rp. 15.000, untuk logo Rp. 3000 perbuah, Namun harga jasa pembordiran tetap disesuaikan dengan objeknya, bahkan jasa bordir bisa sampai ratusan ribu rupiah per unit tergantung tingkat kesulitan dan banyak ruang yang dikerjakan.
